THE CLASSICAL WORLD: FROM THE TAMPA MUSEUM OF ART

Mar 14, 2008CALL FOR TIMES -

The Classical World: From the Collection of the Tampa Museum of Art Opens March 14, 2008 The Elaine and Thurman Gillespy, Jr. Gallery The Classical World is a long-term loan exhibition of 200 plus rare Greek and Roman antiquities from the collection of the Tampa Museum of Art. Recognized as the finest collection of its kind in the southeastern United States, The Classical World surveys the material culture of the Mediterranean area from the Neolithic period to the Roman Imperial period, roughly 8500 BC to 476 AD. The exhibition illustrates the types of art works characteristic of ancient Greece and Rome: painted pottery; sculpture in marble, bronze, and terra cotta; personal ornaments of bronze and gold; struck silver and gold coins; and a variety of ancient glass vessels as well as other items that illuminate interesting aspects of daily life. Highlights of the MOAS installation include an elegant and rare marble head of the serene Athena, and a breathtaking marble torso of Aphrodite. MOAS Chief Curator, Cynthia Duval notes, In great part, my own fascination with the Tampa loan lies in the wide variety of ceramic vases, bowls and containers in the collection, once used in public ceremonies and private life. Illustrated with scenes of the everyday interspersed with famed figures of mythology, each piece tells a story that makes classical Greece come alive; figures from antiquity encircle, enhance and emphasize usage and focus on cultural beliefs.

WINTERING IN OLD DAYTONA

Feb 19, 200910:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Wintering in Old Daytona 1880's ~1940's Event Date: 2/19/09 - 6/6/09 10 a.m.- Tuesday-Saturday 4 p.m. A simpler time for visitors to Daytona Beach, Florida without television, video games and rock 'n roll is the theme of the current exhibit at the Halifax Historical Museum. Grande Hotels gave great service, horse and buggies were always seen on the beach, along with the newest toy for the wealthy, the automobile. The exhibit shows how sports such as golf, tennis and boat regattas have changed and how some sports have remained the same! Golf clubs and an old golf bag from the 1920's look antiquated by today's standards. Old fishing nets and fishing rods look strange and out of place compared to the fishing gear of today. Postcards tell of the fun and leisure to be gained in the warm weather during winter months in Daytona Beach, Florida. 252 S. Beach StreetDaytona Beach, Fl Phone: (386) 255-6976

Jun 20, 09 - Aug 29, 09 10 a.m. to 4 pm, Tuesday through Friday; 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday - Gallery hours. Pabst Visitor Center & Gallery, Atlantic Center for the Arts, 1414 Art Center Avenue, New Smyrna Beach. Matthew Schlagbaum - Survival of the Richest, 2009, pill bottles, mannequin, 20 x 12x 12 For the past twenty years, Atlantic Center for the Arts has invited all Florida state university art department chairs and/or program directors in the visual arts to nominate up to three outstanding undergraduates to be considered for a group exhibition. This annual program is intended to benefit promising young artists pursuing educational goals by exhibiting their work at a prestigious art institute, as well as by having their work juried by an Atlantic Center for the Arts Master Artist-in-Residence. This year's juror is John F. Simon Jr. (www.numeral.com) who participated as a Master Artist-in-Residence in 2008. The following students have been selected from the 20 statewide nominations: Jennifer Surgent - University of Central Florida; Ricardo Navarro - University of Florida; Nancy Tien - University of Florida; Matthew Schlagbaum - University of South Florida. Excerpt from Juror John F. Simon Jr.s Statement: For this show, I chose a group of artists who carefully balance their inner personal journey with outward aesthetic sensibility. They have an equal need for self-discovery and beauty and I think this is the best balance for an extended artistic practice. They must make something beautiful even if they question the source. Take your time looking at this show. Each artist is a novel worth reading. Jennifer Surgent is drawn by personal specters in her night wanderings but renders the mysterious darkness vibrant with color. Matthew Schlagbaum collects the detritus of commercial society and charges it with personal meaning. Ricardo Navarro satires cultural icons but spends his energy rendering them in meticulous drawings. Nancy Tien grapples with race by creating personal rituals to expose her emotions. It was a joy to see such a variety of strong work and to get a feel for what the next generation of artists will explore. Free/Public Invited.
